Ascent Academies of Utah was authorized by the Utah State Charter School Board and the Utah State Board of Education in February 2013.

The Charter Application describes the organizational structure of AAU, our unique and research-based program of instruction, and the school goals and background.  Please note, the policies and bylaws contained in the original charter application are subject to change by the governing board. To view the school’s current policies, please visit the Policies and Handbooks page.  Also, the Utah State Charter School Board has approved charter amendments, which have been incorporated into the charter application.

The Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) is a research-based educational philosophy from the University of Connecticut. Ascent Academies of Utah (AAU) is a network of charter schools that provides its students with a rich and individualized academic program utilizing the successful Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM). AAU’s network of schools combines SEM’s research-based strategies with curriculum and instructional methods aligned to the Utah Core Standards in order to provide students throughout the network with engaging learning opportunities.

The Schoolwide Enrichment Model is described by Dr. Renzulli, its founder, as a detailed blueprint for total school improvement that allows each school the flexibility to develop its unique programs based on local resources, student demographics, and school dynamics as well as faculty strengths and creativity. Although this research-based model is founded on highly successful practices that originated in special programs for the gifted and talented students, its goal is to promote both challenging and enjoyable high-end learning across a wide range of school types, levels, and demographic differences.

All AAU students participate in Enrichment Clusters. “Enrichment Clusters allow groups of students who share a common interest to come together each week during specially designated time blocks to produce a product, performance, or targeted service, based on that common interest” (Renzulli, Gentry & Reis (2003) Enrichment Clusters; a practical plan for real-world, student-driven learning). Weekly, 90 minute (45 for Kindergarten Enrichment Clusters at AAU schools focus on students’ strengths and interests and provide unique opportunities for students to develop their talents.

Ascent Academies’ Special Education Department is attempting to identify all children with disabilities who are enrolled at the school.

If a child is having significant difficulty with vision, hearing, speech and/or behavior or is experiencing slow development atypical for his/her age, physical impairments or learning difficulty then he/she may be a child with a disability. Disabilities that could interfere with education include autism, deaf-blindness, deafness, emotional disturbance, hearing impairment, intellectual disabilities, multiple disabilities, orthopedic impairment, specific learning disabilities, communication disorders, traumatic brain injury and visual impairment. Federal law mandates the provision of free educational programs and/or services for such persons.

If you know of a student who might qualify for Special Education services, including a student suspected of having a disability even though he/she is advancing from grade to grade, please contact your AAU campus Special Education Department.
